Moto GP: Pre-Season Roundup

Maverick Vinales

We’re only a week away now from the first round of the 2017 Moto GP season, and we can’t wait. Especially now that the final pre-season tests are over in Sepang, Phillip Island and Qatar.

It seems that Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha) has topped the time sheets once again in Qatar. Things are looking good this year for Viñales who has come out on top throughout all the pre-season tests in 2017. His best lap of the Qatar tests was 1m 54.330s where he was ahead of Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) by 0.071s and Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) by 0.139s.

Following very closely behind was new Ducati team member Jorge Lorenzo by 0.189s, despite the struggles he has been facing on his new bike. One we were surprised to see come out in fifth position was satellite team rider for Pull & Bear Aspar, Alvaro Bautista who was behind by only 0.384s in spite of suffering a crash. Could Bautista be one to watch out for this season?

Taking P6 was the UK’s Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Racing) with a fastest lap of 1m 54.750s, while P7 was taken by Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) who is another satellite team member who has continued to impress throughout all of the pre-season tests and is another rider to keep an eye on this year.

Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) came out 8th with his fastest lap being 1m 54.821, Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) took P9 falling behind Viñales by 0.570s, and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) took P10 after crashing three times during the final session. However, Marquez was testing out new fairing and is said to still be feeling confident about his performance.

Unfortunately for Valentino Rossi, the nine-time World Champion took P11 in the final day of testing with a lap time of 1m 55.185s, while Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) took P12 (0.954s), Karel Abraham (Pull & Bear Aspar) took P13 (1.003s), Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) in P14 and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) in P15.

We can’t wait for race day.
